Just Ask

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

by Success Expert Sharmen Lane

Not long ago I was speaking to an author.  I had noticed that she had an endorsement from Deepak Chopra on the cover of her book.  I was surprised and impressed, and was curious how she managed to get an endorsement from the one and only Deepak Chopra.  A few days later, curiosity got the best of me, and I called her and said, “How did you get Deepak Chopra to write you an endorsement?”  She replied, “I wrote him an email and asked him for it.”

Is it really that simple?  After all, there is the old adage "ask, and you shall receive”.  This got me to thinking.  Why don’t more people ask for what they want?  I mean if you ask for something, and you don’t get it, you are no worse off than you already are right?  Look at children.  They have no problem asking for what they want.  Even if they don’t get it, many times they will continue to ask until they do.

This sent me on a new mission.  As an author, motivational speaker and radio host, I could really gain a lot by just asking for what I want.  Now, I had always been pretty good about going out and getting what I wanted or making what I wanted happen, but it never occurred to me to ask someone else to give me something I wanted.  First stop, endorsement for my book.  Who do I admire and respect, and would like to have endorsement from?  Brian Tracy.  I went to his website and find his email address and sent him a request for an endorsement.  A week or so later, he replied with “yes, It’d be my pleasure to endorse your book.  Please see below.”  Hhmmmm. Maybe getting what you want is as simple as asking for it.

A few nights later, I got an email advertising a new workshop by Michael Gerber, author of The E Myth.   “I bet he would be a great interview”, I thought.   I went to his website found his email address and asked him for an interview on my radio show, Success Made Simple on webtalkradio.net.  Then, days later, I was watching A Big Idea with Donny Deutsch on CNBC.  One of the guests was Michael Port, author of Book Yourself Solid and Beyond Booked Solid. This again led me to think, he has great information that listeners on Success Made Simple would find valuable.  Yet again, I went to his website and asked for an interview.  And yet again, he said yes.

How could I have gone my entire adult life and not realize how easy it was to not only ask for the things I wanted, but actually get them?  Now, people started asking me, “How did you get Michael Gerber on your show?” or “Wow, Brian Tracy endorsed your book.  How’d you get that?” Of course now it was my turn to say, I asked for it.

Think about the things you want it your life.  Do you want a raise, or different behavior from your spouse or children?  Do you want extra dressing for your salad at dinner? Do you want a new bike for Christmas?  Think about the things you want in your life and ask yourself if you don’t have them because you haven’t asked for them.

Moral of this story is, ask for what you want.  No matter what it is.  If you are told no then you’re not any worse off than you already are.  You don’t have what you want or need now, but if you ask for it you may just get it. Either way, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What are you waiting for?  Just ask.

5 Steps to Out Tough, Tough Days

Monday, October 20th, 2008

by Success Expert Sharmen Lane

Tough days. We all have them. Is it reasonable to think that we are never going to face adversity? Not really. I once had someone say it would be great to date a motivational speaker, there’s no negativity.” As I am a motivational speaker I can tell you, no negativity is just not possible. But what can you do to make those tough days a little less rough.
  1. The first thing is to be aware and accept that things are just not always going to go your way. Sometimes things simply don’t go the way you want them to. Acceptance of "what is" will.
  2. Once you realize things thing are going askew, stop what you are doing, and take a slow deep breath. Take 5 seconds to breathe in and 5 seconds to exhale. This is almost like stopping the clock and resetting it.
  3. Change your physiology. Stand up and shake it off. Dance, jump up and down, shift your posture into a one of power. Shoulders back, head up, etc.
  4. Have a happy or good mood song. Is there a song that when you hear it, you can’t help but smile or feel good? Think right now about a song you like or simply pay attention to one that raises your spirits when you hear it. Have several songs that you can play so you are not only getting in a good mood you are staying there. Make a CD or download a bunch of songs onto your ipod and play them whenever you feel the need.
  5. Start your day off with something good. Do you enjoy a quiet cup of coffee by yourself? Maybe you like to run or exercise to begin day. Maybe you like a cup of tea and the news, or maybe you like to belly dance to Shikira. Whatever your thing is, do it first thing when you get up. No better way to start the day than with something that makes you smile.

Choices and Consequences

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

by Success Expert Sharmen Lane

Every choice we make has a consequence. Some will be good, some bad and other indifferent. Sometimes your choices will all be awful, but you still have a choice.  Not making a choice is making a choice. C. Wright Mills said, "Freedom is, first of all, the chance to formulate the available choices, to argue over them — and then, the opportunity to choose.  Wayne Dyer says, "Be miserable. Or motivate yourself.  Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice."

Breaking Through Barriers

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

by Personal Growth Expert Sharmen Lane

Fear is the number one barrier that stops us from getting what we want. However, there are really only two types of fears. Real fears and fake fears. The saddest part is that fake fears are what hold us back far more than real ones.

What’s the difference? A real fear is something that can cause physical harm or death. A fake fear is something that only exists in your mind and can change depending on your perspective.

For example, real fears are things like Ophidiophobia or Arachnophobia which are better known as the fear of snakes or spiders. These are things that could cause you physical harm or death. That would be a real fear.

On the flip side, you have fake fears. These are things that only exist in our minds. Things like fear of failure, success, rejection, etc. These things will not cause you physical harm or death. You will not suffer any injuries and you won’t die.  You won’t end up in the hospital if you fail at something. Essentially nothing bad happens. So why is it that things like fear of failure or rejection hold us back from getting what we want?

Ego. (to learn more about the ego read The Power of Now) Ego is the reason things like failure and rejection stop us from making progress or working towards our goal. Silly if you think about it, isn’t it? Why would you not work towards something even if you might fail? So what if you fail. Failure is just a matter of perspective. In my mind there is no such thing as failure. There are only results. If I don’t get the results I’m looking for I’d bet I learned something along the way. That’s called learning and I simply will not believe that anything learned is a waste. Lessons are lessons and the important thing is to learn them.

If you find that you are not making progress or are not taking any action at all towards a goal, ask yourself what you are afraid of. No matter what the answer is, ask the next two questions. Will this cause me physical harm? Will this cause my death? Likelihood is the answer is no. So step up to the plate and swing. What do you really have to lose? Honestly, the only thing you have to lose is the opportunity to get exactly what you want.

It’s Not Personal

Monday, September 15th, 2008

by Success Expert Sharmen Lane~ Motivational Speaker and Author

Today we are discussing a whole new way of looking at people, places and things and how to not take them personally. A great resource for this topic is the book titled "The Four Agreements"  by Don Miguel Ruiz.  As all things good, bad or indifferent have nothing to do with you. In the big scheme of things it’s rarely about us. The good we like to think are personal and that’s ok, but the bad things that don’t feel so good well wouldn’t it be nice if we could just dispose of them as if they never happened? Well, we can’t make them not happen, but we can help you change your perception so they don’t feel as bad!

What You Believe, Is What You’ll Receive

Friday, September 5th, 2008

By Success Expert Sharmen Lane

You have to know what you want in order to get what you want. Do you want to be thinner, have more money, get your degree? Whatever you are aiming for, you can have and you are far more likely to obtain it, or be it or have it, if you can see it! Cut out pictures of what you want. Jim Carey did this with a check. He wrote himself a $20 Million check and just a few months later he was offered the role in “The Cable Guy” for $20 Million which is said to be a big part of the law of attraction. He believed it and he received it. Believing it is easy when you already have a picture of it as if it already exists.

Farewell To Fear

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

There are only two fears that exist. Real fears and fake fears. Most of us have fears about things that aren’t even real. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of success, etc. These are not real fears. They are imaginary things we make up in our heads about what would happen if.  In this episode you are given the tools to say farewell to fear!
