To be an Olympic athlete is a tremendous feat in and of itself. The hard work, sacrifice and commitment are second to none. So how does one find greatness in a moment of grief? That is a question Joannie Rochette can answer.
Many time figure skating medalist, Joannie Rochette, lost her mother two days before a flawless performance on February 23 at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Most people can’t imagine what it would be like to make it to the Olympics. Being on a stage for the whole world to see, many would crack under the pressure. Imagine it’s in your home town and you are representing your country and tragedy strikes.
Joannie’s mother died of a massive heart attack on Sunday, February 21. Joannie is set to skate her short program just two days later, and pulled it off flawlessly. This young woman is an example for the world to follow. She made a choice to go out onto the ice, do her best and make her mother proud. This is a moment we could all learn from.
We all have pressures; we all have things on our mind. However, most of us don’t have to perform on a stage that will be seen by millions of people across the globe. Joannie Rochette found the strength and determination to give the performance of a lifetime. She is currently in third place, but is in first in our hearts.
May we all take this young athletes triumph as an example to demonstrate that we can all find our greatness, even in the most difficult moments.
No matter how you rang in the new year, there is no better time than the first day of the year to get started on making this an unforgettable, unstoppable year.
Most people set New Years Resolutions on New Years Eve, unfortunately they are quick to be forgotten by the end of the month… if it takes that long. What can you do to make this year different? Here are a few tools and tips to give you the edge and make what you want happen.
1. Write your goal down. Don’t just say "I’m going to do blank."Say, "I’m DOING blank."
2. Tell everyone you know.Make a list starting right now of all the people you can share your goal with. Then call, email, text, twitter or whatever else you want but tell anyone and everyone you know about what you are DOING!
3. Create a vision board.I do this every New Year’s Eve and now have vision board parties on New’s Year’s.Cut out pictures of what you want and post them where you can see them often. If you want to be an author, cut out a book cover and put your name and face on it.If you want a lean, 10% body fat, size 8 body, or 34 inch waist, cut out a picture and put your face on it.Make it real and see it so you can be it!
There you go, three simple steps to making what you want, real. Remember, you have to make a plan and take action and these first three steps will start your journey.
Have an extraordinary year! Now get to it!

I recently interviewed Michael Jackson, obviously not THE Michael Jackson who recently passed, on my radio program, Now to Wow on 96.7 WBLQ. Mike is currently a partner at Sarkissian Mason, www.sarkissianmason.com a New York City based agency of invention specializing in developing creative solutions to its clients business opportunities utilizing technology. Mike is the former VP of Marketing and Advertising for General Motors North America where he was responsible for some of the most successful new product launches in the company’s history. He can share some very detailed and interesting inside information on the fall of the auto industry, but that’s a topic for a whole different article.
While at GM, Mike created a valuable top 10 list of good business practices that can be used to excel in both business and in life. As basic as they may seem, some of the best things in life are those that are simple but rarely used. Perhaps you have heard the phrase, common knowledge doesn’t mean common practice. Well, this top 10 list fits that phrase perfectly as many of us have heard these things before but many don’t necessarily practice them. Hopefully these basic concepts will remind you of what you already know to help you in business and in life.
1. Think and act as if you are the CEO
2. Be proud of who you are
3. Never compromise your personal value
4. Know and understand your role
5. Give 110% every day
6. Keep the company of good people
7. Develop a talent for winning
8. Give back to your community
9. Engage a personal coach or mentor
10. Have fun, take time to enjoy yourself
Put these 10 tips into regular practice and you are sure to be successful in business and in life.
I know more people today than ever before that are looking for that special someone. Well if you want to meet the man or woman of your dreams then you need to put yourself out there. You need to take that NO FEAR approach to dating.
No fear rule #1. Dont take anything personally! Dating is a numbers game, just like sales. I get excited every time I have a bad date because I believe dates are like sales calls… it takes 10 no’s to get a yes. It takes 10 bad, to get a good.
No fear rule #2- Have no fear. Who cares if you get rejected?!? I believe there are two types of fear. Real fear and fake fear. Real fear can cause you physical harm or death. Fake fear doesnt, it only exists in your head. I once approached a man and said, "Excuse me, but I couldnt help but over hear your conversation and I find you intriguing. You seem like someone I would like to get to know better." I reached out to give him my business card and he looked me up and down and said "Sorry I only date beautiful women." I turned and went back to my girlfriend and said "YES! One more down, only 3 more to go!"
I have these and many other philosophies in my book, The 7 Secrets to Create Your Fate. I give you the tools, tips and strategies to create the life you want.
Successful people understand the difference between can’t and won’t. There is a lot of power in words. They can strengthen and empower us. They can build an army or start a war. Think about the words you use to describe yourself, and what you are capable of. Do your words say victim or victor?
Think about the words can’t and won’t. How often do you say I can’t when you really mean won’t? Can’t means that you are physically not capable while won’t means that you are choosing not to.
I can’t go up to a perfect stranger and introduce myself. Yes you can. You are physically capable of walking up to someone, sticking out your hand and saying “Hi, I’m Sharmen Lane, what’s your name?” Many will say, “I can’t do that.” Yes you can. You may have to dig deep and find the courage in you, but you are physically capable of it.
In business or your personal life the words you use can make a powerful statement. I once had a woman in sales tell me she couldn’t walk in to potential client offices and ask them for business. That’s when it dawned on me that there is a tremendous difference between can’t and won’t. I responded to this woman with “You can’t. So you are telling me that you are not physically capable of walking to the door, sticking out your hand, grabbing the knob, turning it, pulling the door open and walking through the opening?’ Of course with resistance she replied with “Well, yes I can do THAT”. That is the difference between can’t and won’t.
This isn’t to say it will be easy. It may be difficult. It may require some extreme mental discipline, or having a talk with yourself to make you do something you previously “couldn’t”. I never said it was easy, and sometimes you will have to psych your self up and literally force yourself do it. But you can. As soon as you take responsibility and the empowering position you will be amazed at the things you can and will do.
The next time you hear yourself saying "I can’t…” stop for a moment and ask yourself, it is really that I can’t, that I’m physically not capable, or is it that I won’t? If you determine that you could but you choose not too then it’s wont. At that point you can choose to change your way of thinking, step up to the plate and do it!
Times are tough, or so the media would have us believe. I know with so much going wrong in so many places and in so many areas of everyone’s lives it is very easy to just hang up our hat and quit. I know things are difficult. I know jobs have been lost, finances have been strained and hope is dwindling. But I ask you, if you were riding your bike up a steep mountain and you thought you didn’t have much left and were close to tossing in the towel, if someone were to be riding down the hill and said “hang in there, you’re closer than you think,” would be able to muster up the strength to keep going?
I have been working for three years to get a publisher to take my new book. I have been turned down by almost every literary agent and publisher on the planet. But I stayed my course and held strong in believing I could make it if I kept going. After more than three years, it happened. I finally got a book deal and I got it in one of the worst economies and troubled times in history. So I say ignore what anyone and everyone says about how times are going to get worse before they get better and all other negativity floating around today. Stay true to your goals and dreams and you will make it happen, but first you must believe. When you want to give up, just remember, “You are closer than you think.”
